PlateMate Micro Loading 5/8 Pound Donut Weight Plate - 1 Pair Review

In weightlifting, we sometimes hit a plateau that we just cannot exceed. Even adding 2 1/2 pounds feels like a ton. And trying to do extra reps with the same weight is likewise near-impossible.
The PlateMate micro plate weighs only 5/8 of a pound, or 1 1/4 pounds for a pair. Using such small poundage may allow a person to lift just a little more...and keep on progressing.
These plates will fit a regular bar or an Olympic style bar. Further, they are magnetic (3 contact points), so they can be attached to solid dumbells, too.
The product seems to be well-made and durable.

PlateMates (Pair) Review

I was introduced to the concept of "microloading" through the writings of Stuart McRobert Build Muscle Lose Fat Look Great: Everything You Need to Know to Transform Your Body(which I highly recommend). Previously, when weight training, I would work up to my best lifting poundages and would remain there indefinately. I now cycle my training intensity to build a gaining monentum troughout the cycle. As I reach my previous best poundages I make use of these "little gems" to nudge myself beyond prior sticking points in weight. I own both sizes of the PlateMate hexagonal weights(2pr. ea. of the 1 1/4lb'ers & the 5/8lb'ers). I own a complete set of hexagonal dumbells from 5lbs. to 50lbs. in 5lb. increments. Sometimes that 5lb. jump (10lbs. between the 2 'bells) is quite substantial. For instance on strict DB curls I would master the 15lb. 'bells and move up to the 20lb'ers where my form would completely break down to "cheat" the weight up out of necessity. I had always wished that someone would make an 18lb. 'bell. Now I just slap on a pr. of 1 /14lb PlateMates on ea. of my 15lb'ers and voila, 17 1/2 pound dumbbells. I'll even add the 5/8lb PlateMates to the outside of the 1 1/4lb units. Now I have 18 3/4lb. 'bells. You can see how in this manner the Jump from 15lb to 20lb now becomes something achievable through manageable, small increments of progressive weights. My only negative observation would be the lack of a 1 7/8lb. PlateMate. When stacking the small one onto the big one it makes for a pretty wide overall package and care must be taken during certain lifts to avoid knocking off the little ones. (They have some type of coating, maybe rubber, that makes the magnets hold a little weaker when stacked in this manner.) Overall experience was very satisfying, and I highly recommend this product to anyone interested in gaining strength or muscle.

These are designed to be an ideal match for the hex style solid dumbbells, but they work perfectly well with any type weighted resistance, including: Olympic and standard weight plates, weight stacks on machines, or whatever else.

If you lift for long enough, at some point your progression (continued addition of weight) will stall on your lifts and you will not be able to complete your desired amount of reps in a given set with the next increment in weight available. This is more likely to happen on smaller isolation movements first, but will happen to all lifts eventually.

Let me give an example using the biceps curl done with dumbbells. You begin with a fairly light weight (say 5lbs.) and every other week you consistently are able to add more weight. After 2 mos. your up to 25lbs. Since the dumbbell sets progress in 5lb. increments the 30lb'ers are your next choice. Let's say you fail this attempt. Well, that 5lb. jump from 25 to 30lbs. is a 20% increase over your previous max. That's a pretty big jump to make. The PlateMates allow you to add 1-1/4lb, making it a jump of only 5%.This is much easier for the body to adapt to, which delays plateaus and extends the progression of your training cycles. I was stuck at this point for over a year until I purchased these. Imagine a year wasted with no progression that didn't have to happen.

Do yourself a favor and buy 2 pairs each of the 5/8lb'ers and the 1-1/4lb'ers. My only negative comment would be the lack of more available sizes. Ideally, I would like to see a set of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1lb'ers. But just one additional size of 1-7/8lb. would be useful. That way I wouldn't need to stack the 2 sizes on the ends of the 'bells which makes for a pretty wide overall unit. Care must be taken to not knock them off when stacked this way on movements like seated dumbbell curls as they tend to brush against the thigh at the bottom of the motion.
